Following a big increase in people wanting to keep a reptile as a pet at home, most towns and cities will have one or more specialist reptile shops that will sell, or can obtain, almost any reptile a person could want. If snakes aren’t your thing, then maybe a lizard or tortoise will satisfy the need. All reptile shops will encourage their customers to only buy captivity bred animals – this ensures that stocks of the wild animals are not depleted, and also that the reptiles will usually be healthy and stress free.
All reptile owners have to ensure that their pet animal is kept in conditions that mimic the animals natural habitat – reptile shops sell all the equipment like vivariums and terrariums together with all the right heating and lighting controls. The right food for reptiles is as important as the housing, and most specialist stores sell live food such as crickets, locusts, tasty worms and grubs!
Whatever type of reptile a customer wants, it’s almost certainly available. Species such as an African Running Frog, Indian Star Tortoise, Bearded Dragon Chameleon or a Crested Gecko are just a few of the types that can be commonly bought in most reptile shops. Corn snakes, Boas and Pythons are popular amongst the snake lovers, or maybe someone would fancy a Goliath Bird Eating spider, an even larger version of the famous Tarantula.
